Tanyeka Alexander
Senior Accounting Honors Student is Maryland’s Sole Recipient of AICPA/Accountemps Scholarship

Tanyeka Alexander, a senior in the University of Baltimore’s Merrick School of Business, is the recipient of a 2014-15 AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Alexander, an intern in the tax department of the Baltimore headquarters of the CliftonLarsonAllen accounting firm, is the only student from Maryland to receive the award. More than 1,100 students nationwide applied for the scholarship; 10 were selected.

The $2,500 award is given each year to undergraduate and graduate-level accounting students who plan to pursue their CPA license. The recipients have demonstrated academic excellence, while showing exceptional leadership.

“On behalf of the AICPA, I applaud this year’s recipients of the AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship for their commitment to academic achievement,” said Joanne Fiore, AICPA vice president of professional media, pathways and inclusion. “These exceptional students are a testament to the strength of the pipeline of talent coming into the accounting profession.”

One of Alexander’s professors sees her as the kind of student that is really impacting the accounting field.

"We are extremely proud of Tanyeka. She continues to excel in the classroom, participate in extra-curricular activities, and give back to the community,” said Jan Williams, associate professor of accounting. “It is exhilarating to have the AICPA recognize her for her hard work in preparing to become a future CPA. Tanyeka exemplifies the caliber of students we are diligently striving to encourage and develop in the Merrick School of Business."

As AICPA/Accountemps Scholarship recipients, Alexander and the other recipients become part of the AICPA Legacy Scholars program, which provides a one-year AICPA scholarship and helps develop the soft skills needed to maintain a successful career through service. Scholarship recipients plan, promote and execute community service projects that relate to accounting, serve the community and are meaningful to the student.

AICPA Legacy Scholars are Student Affiliate Members of the AICPA, which is a free membership option available to all students enrolled in school. Each AICPA Legacy Scholar is assigned a coach to provide guidance on the student’s service project and to advise on questions related to the profession and the work environment.

Eligible applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and complete at least 30 semester hours in college-level coursework, including six semester hours in accounting. A task force from AICPA’s Pre-certification Education Executive Committee and Accountemps representatives select the recipients based on academic achievement; demonstration of leadership and volunteerism; and overall commitment to becoming a licensed CPA professional.

“We are proud to partner with the AICPA to honor these outstanding students for their achievements as they prepare for their accounting careers,” said Andrew Denka, executive vice president of Accountemps. “We look forward to their future contributions to the professional community.”
