A new agenda for high-achieving students in the Merrick School of Business, set to debut this fall under the auspices of the University of Baltimore's Helen P. Denit Honors Program, is designed to inspire students to reach new levels of understanding, insight and capabilities in areas about which they are passionate, by exploring their talents for leadership, civic engagement and intellectual discourse. The Business Honors Program builds on what the school’s Department of Accounting created for a select group of undergraduate accounting majors last fall.
The goal of the new Denit Business Honors program is to position its undergraduate participants to become highly effective in business by helping them to acquire the skills for leadership and innovation. The complexities and increasing competitiveness of the global market demand that these students enter the workforce fully equipped, well-rounded and focused on their paths to success. The curriculum will feature interdisciplinary learning communities charged with combining theory and practice. Courses and seminars will establish connections in personal, professional and leadership development. The benefits will include mentoring, networking and internship opportunities with the area’s business and nonprofit communities.
"In today's highly competitive, internationally-oriented marketplace, students need to be fully prepared for a career that will span several decades," said Darlene Smith, dean of the School of Business. "In addition to learning the technical skills, students will need to establish effective communication skills informed by cultural awareness and sensitivity to diverse workplaces."
The Helen P. Denit Honors program will accommodate both freshman and transfer students. Exclusive grants and scholarships for honors students are available.
