Economist Edgar Harrell Named Chair of Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Board

Edgar C. Harrell, an economist and business leader with more than 30 years of experience in managing public and private programs in entrepreneurial training, technology commercialization, investment and capital market development, has been named chair of the advisory board for the University of Baltimore's Center of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Harrell will lead a board of 16 veteran entrepreneurs, scholars, and mentors in advising the center on its student-based initiatives and ongoing projects and programming. The center, founded in 2006, currently serves hundreds of UB students and alumni who are active in Baltimore's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Harrell, managing partner for Harrell Capital Partners, an early-stage equity investment firm in Chevy Chase, Md., has held senior managerial positions with a number of private firms and agencies, including the U.S. Department of State, the Agency for International Development, and Price Waterhouse. He serves on several boards, including the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern Pennsylvania, The Penn State Research Foundation, Penn Venture Partners, the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority, DFR Solutions, and others.

Johnetta Hardy, director of CEI, said Harrell offers a new perspective on the world of entrepreneurship and what students need to succeed in their start-ups and small-business ventures.

"He literally offers a turnkey solution for the issue of how we can best bring in a wealth of practical experience and ideas to our table," Hardy said. "Edgar is ready to take on the challenges of developing and inspiring our board, and our students are awed by his international expertise and his positive outlook on creating businesses. From coaching, adding insights into high-tech, and preparing our entrepreneurs for impressing venture capital representatives, to simply finding the passion that can lead to success, he is poised to help take the center to the next level."

Harrell served as an adjunct professor of international business and management at Dickinson College, and currently is entrepreneur in residence for a new entrepreneur program at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, where he teaches three graduate courses. He also teaches an undergraduate course in new ventures at the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies. He also has taught at Johns Hopkins University's Carey Business School, Thammasat University in Thailand, and George Washington University.

Harrell holds a B.S. degree in chemistry from Dickinson College, a doctorate in economics from Columbia University, and a certificate from the East Asian Institute in Japanese studies, also from Columbia. He attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
