J.C. Weiss Receives USM Faculty Award for Public Service

J.C. Weiss, executive in residence in the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship in the Merrick School of Business, was named a recipient of a 2013 University System of Maryland's Regents Faculty Award. The awards are the highest honor presented by the board to exemplary faculty members throughout the USM in six categories, including collaboration, mentoring, public service, research/scholarship/creative activity, teaching, and innovation.

Weiss and other USM faculty members attended the official presentation of the awards during the Board of Regents’ meeting at the University of Baltimore on April 12. He was presented with a Regents Faculty Award for Public Service.

"J.C. is one of the strongest leaders I know," said Darlene Smith, dean of the Merrick School of Business. "His service to the University—especially to our students—and his service to the greater business and nonprofit communities is inspiring. I am truly elated that Board of Regents recognized his passion for service."

Weiss, a faculty member in the Merrick School of Business since 1999, specializes in educating UB's entrepreneurial students in the sophisticated work of conceptualizing, developing and capitalizing their business plans and strategies. Weiss also focuses on the growing field of social entrepreneurship—a type of entrepreneurship which recognizes social problems and leverages entrepreneurial principles to create positive change and solutions.

He is a member of several area boards, including the Chesapeake Business Finance Corp., Baltimore Clayworks, the University System of Maryland Foundation, the Engineering Society of Baltimore, St. Agnes Hospital Foundation, and the Greater Baltimore Technology Council. In 2013, Weiss received both the Dean Costello Award and the H. Mebane Turner Service Award from the Merrick School of Business.
