Consistently, Maryland stands at or near the top of national rankings for basic research and development. This will come as no surprise to many who do business in the state, whether it's in government contracting, defense, health care, banking and finance, or in any one of the dozens of other key sectors of the knowledge economy as defined by the Silicon Valley model. The lecture was part of Parsons's $1 million donation to the University to establish a new professorship specializing in digital communication—a burgeoning field that brings together computer science, graphic design, entrepreneurship and related skills across several sectors of the 21st century global economy.

The meeting took place in the offices of Dean Darlene Smith on Dec. 11, where the two Pittas quickly struck up a conversation about what it’s like to share your name with someone else—especially when that person is a popular professional athlete. Their brief chat was covered by local television and print media.
