Demand for Leaders in Maryland's High-Tech Business Environment Inspires New Graduate Degree
Consistently, Maryland stands at or near the top of national rankings for basic research and development. This will come as no surprise to many who do business in the state, whether it's in government contracting, defense, health care, banking and finance, or in any one of the dozens of other key sectors of the knowledge economy as defined by the Silicon Valley model. But its much lower position in entrepreneurial activity—#33, according to a recent report by the Kauffman Foundation—is prompting the Merrick School of Business to ramp up its efforts to provide first-rate preparation for the state's future leaders of tech-oriented businesses, whether new or established in the marketplace.

Go Daddy Founder Parsons Returns to Alma Mater for Talk
Go Daddy Executive Chairman and Founder Bob Parsons, B.S. '75, D.H.L. '08, returned to his alma mater last November to deliver a talk to University of Baltimore students who represent the next generation of digital designers, writers, leaders, scholars, innovators and entrepreneurs. The lecture was part of Parsons's $1 million donation to the University to establish a new professorship specializing in digital communication—a burgeoning field that brings together computer science, graphic design, entrepreneurship and related skills across several sectors of the 21st century global economy.

Dennis Pitta (Professor) Meets Dennis Pitta (Baltimore Raven)
That's right: With a little effort on the part of the Merrick School of Business and the Baltimore Ravens, our own Dennis Pitta, professor of marketing and a veteran researcher and educator, finally got to meet his namesake—Dennis Pitta, tight end for the Ravens and an overall good sport about this little coincidence of names and hometowns. The meeting took place in the offices of Dean Darlene Smith on Dec. 11, where the two Pittas quickly struck up a conversation about what it’s like to share your name with someone else—especially when that person is a popular professional athlete. Their brief chat was covered by local television and print media.
